About
I’m Yannick Feld, a physicist turned software developer. Since June 2025 I have been working as a software developer at worldiety in Oldenburg.
Research
I studied physics at the University of Oldenburg, where I also earned my doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in 2023 in the Computational Physics group of Prof. Dr. Alexander K. Hartmann. My thesis, Large-deviation properties of dynamical networks, was about the rare events: what happens far out in the tails of the distribution, where ordinary simulations almost never go. Getting there takes specialised Monte Carlo methods such as Wang-Landau and replica-exchange sampling.
The systems I studied include:
- Epidemics: large deviations of the SIR model, around the epidemic threshold, with vaccination, lockdowns and protective measures, and with mutating, host-shifting diseases.
- Power grids: the basin stability of Kuramoto-like oscillator networks (the topic of my master’s thesis).
- Neural networks: coexistence of asynchronous and clustered dynamics in noisy inhibitory networks.
- Supply networks: critical demand in stochastic flow models.

During my PhD I was supported by a scholarship of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes). I also spent research stays at the Istituto dei Sistemi Complessi (ISC-CNR) in Sesto Fiorentino, Italy, hosted by Dr. Simona Olmi (2022), and at CY Cergy Paris Université, hosted by Prof. Dr. Alessandro Torcini (2023).
After my PhD I worked as a postdoc at the CEA in Paris-Saclay in the group of Dr. Marc Barthelemy, on stochastic models of flows in supply networks.
Before physics took over, I worked as a student and research assistant on human-computer interaction projects at the University of Oldenburg and at OFFIS. That’s where my first publications came from.
Software
Most of my research code was written in Rust, which is still my favourite language. These days I write software full-time. You can find some of my code on GitHub.
Off the keyboard
When I’m not in front of a screen, you might find me on stage doing improv theater.
